The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
